The nation's oldest county park was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1895. Paths meander along a large lake and brook in this peaceful four-mile-long park. This park also features a butterfly garden, pedestrian bridges, and an entrance gateway. Prime time for romance here is April, when Branch Brook's 2,000 Japanese cherry trees are covered with pink and white blossoms. Consider holding your ceremony at the magnificent Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, then crossing the street for a garden reception in a cherry tree grove. Hunterdon County Arboretum

The arboretum offers a large gazebo for your wedding party, surrounded by a terrace and gardens for 50 guests. A smaller gazebo accommodates 25 guests outside. The Deer Path Park gazebo holds five people with 100 guests outside, near a pond and gardens. See photos on website.

If you're looking for an outdoor backdrop for your ceremony, reception, or pictures, the Morris County Park Commission has some wonderful facilities to offer. The Lodge at Schooley's Moun-tain County Park in Washington Township has a large porch, complete with Adirondack chairs and views of an eight-acre lake, and can accommodate up to 120 guests for a wedding. The Casino at Silas Condict County Park in Kinnelon is an historic stone building that used to be a speakeasy, complete with bar and stage. Its outdoor patio overlooks an adjacent lake. The Casino holds up to 75 guests. The Cultural Center at Lewis Morris Park in Mendham has a meeting room with oil paintings and an outdoor courtyard where marriage vows can be exchanged. The center can hold up to 95 people. The Willowwood Arbore-tum in Chester Township accommodates tent weddings or parties for approximately 150 guests. There is an old stone barn that is a perfect warm-weather location for cocktail parties, but there is no heat and there are limited bathroom facilities. You also may arrange for a tent party, a ceremony, or to have photographs taken in one of the gardens at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township.

Ceremonies may be held outdoors for 100 people or in the 1889 Colonial Revival house, which accommodates 60. A Summit ordinance prohibits alcohol on the premises. You may take photos on the grounds even if you do not hold your ceremony there; a voluntary contribution is requested.

Set your big day amidst 35 acres of lush landscape and water features, punctuated with modern sculptures. The contemporary Seward Johnson Center for the Arts accommodates 180 for dinner and dancing or 400 for cocktails. An outdoor terrace is included. Tents are not permitted, but you may hold your ceremony outdoors at The Nine Muses by Carlos Dorrien, or at a stone amphitheater or gazebo. Your guests may enjoy free admission to this magical park all day.
